Long time, no posting. What’s new.

Hey all,

Allen here.  I’m the main site developer, and one of two administrators.

There have been a bunch of comments/emails about site bugs and broken videos.  Even it pains me to read these messages, they’re generally accurate.  TinyTube has been having some trouble lately.  Read on to understand how we got here and what we’re doing to make things better.

How we got here

I was a graduate student when I launched TinyTube two years ago this month.  It started off as a side-project for mobilizing YouTube videos before YouTube Mobile, and mobile video sites generally, existed.  From there I added in videos from some other sites, and it grew.

The current method that TinyTube uses to actually convert video to a format that is phone-compatible (called transcoding) has been flawed from the beginning.  Without getting too technical, this method is very sensitive to changes on the site where the video comes from (e.g. YouTube, Blip.tv, etc), and requires regular adjustments to keep the conversions going smoothly.

Earlier this year I decided to make a push toward graduating, and to do that I had to cut back on non-school activities (read: TinyTube maintenance/development).  I graduated in June.  Then, I had to get a job and get up to speed with my new duties, which also meant cutting back on non-job-related activities.  During this time I wasn’t regularly adjusting the transcoding process, so the site gradually became less usable.

What we’re doing now

It’s not all bad though.  Jordan (another TinyTube admin) has been working on a new transcoding system since about August, and I’ve started helping him since November.  We’re going to be swapping out the old transcoder for the new one very soon, like by end of January at latest.

New transcoding system is called PocketVOD, and will be hosted at pocketvod.com (site not yet live).  The idea is to make PocketVOD a very robust and general-purpose transcoding service that can be used to transcode videos for your phone — even videos that aren’t in the TinyTube search engine.

Once we get PocketVOD running and stable, we’ll start updating the TinyTube search engine again.  Right now it contains something like 30 million videos, but the newest is ~6 months old.

  45. Lol it was a good vid. I like intellectual stimulation and verbal jousting as much as the next man but it’s not why i started using the site. I believe he’s got admirable intentions but like most of us, life gets in the way lol. Really do hope he gets it sorted though, and in an ideal world - an mp3 search would pretty much make it the best site on my phone again.
