iPhone does TinyTube

A version of TinyTube that is compatible with the iPhone went live today, July 22, 2007. There were a few technical obstacles to overcome, some of which are documented in our previous blog post, Coming soon: TinyTube on iPhone.

After playing around with an iPhone here, it’s pretty clear that Apple has hyped the iPhone as an awesome device for mobile video… and then not delivering the goods. We expect to have iPhone users start hitting the site hard. Here’s why:

  1. iPhone/YouTube video selection is limited — much smaller than what you can find on TinyTube in terms of video length and selection.
  2. iPhone/YouTube video player only plays in landscape mode. This puts the speakers on the right side of the phone, and it sounds bad. TinyTube plays through quicktime, which allows rotation to any of the four orientations. How did Apple’s designers let this one through, it’s a major design flaw.
  3. iPhone/YouTube EDGE videos are very conservative in terms of bitrate. They look worse than the TinyTube EDGE videos.
  4. iPhone/YouTube player has no option to play WiFi-quality videos if the phone is in EDGE mode. TinyTube lets you choose the WiFi-quality video even if your phone is in EDGE mode, and it works great if you let the video buffer for a few seconds before you start playback.

  1. Until these recent changes the site worked great. Now I get no search results unless I manually check all the available sites each time. I wish it could go back to the way it was.

  5. No problems to report other than occasional ” server busy ” pages. But considering the new porn content availability a bit of a slowdown was to be expected. Lol. Good work guys.

  6. I am activate weekly gprs scheme for this week .Mainly i buy gprs connection only for downloading of tinytube video. But this week is gone out. I havenot any video in this week.
