Queueing time reduced

Posted in: Uncategorized

To understand the queuing system better, read Queueing system explained.

I ran some simple analytics last night, and wait time for videos has been reduced >40% overall. Yay! Here’s we did to achieve this, there was a technical change and a user-interface change:

  1. Added more cache space. We have increased our storage capacity by 2.5x. That means videos stay in “ready” state for a longer time.
  2. Added an hourglass icon to the search results page to show you which videos require queue and which are ready immediately. This lets you know that if you’re only somewhat interested in watching a video and it has an hourglass icon, you might want to just keep browsing to the next result.

As stated, these two changes have resulted in a > 40% reduction in queue waiting, as measured by number of pages viewed. To clarify, this is not a reduction in the time it takes to prepare a single video, just a reduction in the time users are waiting in general.

So far so good and the new storage is only about halfway full, so you should expect to see the number of videos tagged with an hourglass to continue to drop.

However, there is a bias toward more popular content being immediately ready. That is, all videos do not have an equal probability of being cached. If you’re continuing to find that most of your videos require a wait, it may be because you’re searching for content that is not generally popular. The more popular the content that you want to watch, the more likely that it will be available immediately.

  1. I have no problems with the queue system at all guys. I do get quite a lot of unknown media though, is this something you’re able to control on your end?

  4. Joe_Regular,

I’m not sure what is causing your unknown media error. You’re not the first to report it, but we haven’t been able to reproduce this internally. Are you able to give a URL to a video that causes it on your phone? Is the error consistent, i.e. if you try the same link again will it work the 2nd or 3rd time?

  6. Ah patience does seem to be the answer. If i instantly tried to stream/download upon reaching the end of the queue/preparation process 90% of the time the media would be unknown. Wait a further 1 minute and they’ve all been fine. The ready screen just seems to come up a touch before the conversion actually is.
