better low-quality videos

Posted in: Uncategorized

Survey response last month indicated that streaming video is important (77%), and that low quality encoding is not important (63%). Many of you also indicated in the comments that the high-quality encoding uses to much bandwidth to be used on EDGE networks, and is better suited for WiFi or 3G devices.

We’re interpreting these data not as a request to remove the low-quality setting, but as a request to increase the quality to take better advantage of bandwidth available to EDGE devices.

It’s done. We have updated the transcoding options to make the low-quality videos about 30% as good as the high-quality videos. Previous encoding was 10% of high-quality bitrate. We also upped the framerate from 5 fps to 15 fps, now the same as the high-quality setting. We’ll also be adding streaming links for the low-quality videos shortly.
